Molly Moon’s Ice Cream: Challenger Approaching

We may have a new favorite on our hands.

There was a line waiting for us when we got to Molly Moon’s Ice Cream, which gave me hope but also some worries that it may be over-hyped. I was wrong.

This particular ice creamery had a variety of flavors, some seasonal and some year-round. They ranged from flavors like earl grey, sweet cream, and honey lavender. One thing caught my eye that made my job very easy: their sundae section.

On the menu, they had two options for sundaes: Molly’s Favorite Sundae and Get Cozy Sundae. I chose the former, figuring I should trust Molly’s taste; she has a whole chain of ice creameries, after all. It was the best decision of the night.

Molly’s Favorite broke from the traditional sundae formula. The base was a combination of sweet melted chocolate and salted caramel ice creams. That was topped with their hot fudge, chopped hazelnuts, some local organic whipped cream and, of course, a cherry on top.

Quality of Toppings:

I was worried the hazelnuts might prove challenging to eat, but it was quite the contrary. Not only did they provide a delightfully crunchy texture, but the added mass to the sundae didn’t seem overwhelming at all. The ice cream selection and hot fudge already provided a richly dense flavor palette and girth, while the hazelnuts were the garnish they were meant to be. The cream was sweet and tickled the tongue. The cherry was forgettable, but that’s nothing out of the ordinary in the sundae world.

Quality of Fudge:

This fudge had nice viscosity throughout consumption. It provided adequate warmth so brain-freeze was a non-issue. There was no worry the fudge would fall elsewhere in the cup, the bottom was so jam-packed with ice cream it literally had to stay right where it was.

Level of Comfort Only Ordering a Hot Fudge Sundae:

Perfectly normal. It’s an ice cream shop, after all.

Would I prefer this sundae over a McDonald’s hot fudge sundae? Well, Molly’s Favorite doesn’t come cheap, but if I find myself in Seattle I’d choose this over McDonald’s. Shocking, I know.

Final Rating: 8.6/10
